The 15th and 16th century were a time of exploration and discovery for European nations. Taking advantage of new maritime knowledge and inventions, European powers undertook sea expeditions to expand their trade and influence.
What possible rewards might come from exploring the seas for new lands?
By traveling to new land, the rewards can be great. The explorer and the country would gain an universal title from exploring a new place. They would also receive resources like gold, jewels, silks, spices, plants and other physical resources. Exploring the seas might allow the explorers to gain more knowledge, ideas and inventions. In addition, land, people, trade and power is gained. They wanted to get rid of the middle man so they could get a better price and get more money.
What are the risks involved in embarking on a voyage into the unknown?
The sea is a vast, unfamiliar place and it is easy to get lost. The weather can change quickly and a storm can capsize or destroy a ship. Diseases like scurvy are common on a ship, which is small and crowded, allowing disease to quickly spread. Resources are limited and clean, drinkable water is scarce. The food is dry and can even be moldy but still be eaten. Unfriendly natives can be a problem when trying to restock or repair a ship.
What will you do if you actually run into other people?
I would try to negotiate with them and be peaceful. I would offer the other people some of our supplies in exchange for food, water and a place to sleep. If the other people were competing with me, I would try to be friendly but continue on my journey. I would try to be faster and reach my goal sooner than them.
Before You Leave
Your final task before leaving for the long voyage is FOR BOTH to look up ONE piece of new navigation technology you will be using so that you can teach your partner about how you will be using it. THIS INFORMATION COULD SAVE YOUR LIVES! Simply, search for ONE of the following tools and write a few sentences describing WHAT the instrument is and HOW it is used. (You can also look at p. 97 in your text to get you started.)

Caravel-The caravel was designed by the Portuguese in the 1400s. It is a light, fast sailing ship that could sail well into the wind. The planking on the hull was much thinner. The caravel typically had 2 to 3 masts with a square and triangle sail. They could carry up to 130 tons of cargo.
European colonists needed cheap labor to look after the plantations and Native Americans died from disease and other reasons. When Africa was explored by the Portuguese, the Africans were exposed to European diseases and built up immunity. Africans were experienced in farming and planting, which was what the colonists wanted. They were also unfamiliar with the colonies so were unable to escape and, if they did, they would be able to go anywhere or fit in because of their skin color.
2. Explain the Triangular Trade Route
In the Triangular Trade Route, ships from Europe would bring manufactured goods like guns and traded them for slaves on the coast of Western and Central Africa. The slaves were then transported to the West Indies in North America for good raised there like sugar, coffee and tobacco which was then transported back to Europe to sell for manufactured goods.
3. Identify the consequences of the slave trade
Many Africans died on the voyage to the Americas. Almost 11 million Africans were taken and they were young men, women and children. By doing that, the Europeans took away the group of people that contributed the most and produced the most which weakened the African tribes and that area greatly. Slaves in the Americas were treated brutally and had no rights which led to the problem of racism that existed for a long time and still exists today, although it is not so severe. Without the slave trade, Africa's economy today probably would be much stronger.

Japan tried to keep every single idea that wasn't Japanese out of Japan to maintain their
isolation. Japan became isolated in every way to protect their culture. Every person who
wanted to bring other ideas in or share Japanese ideas with the rest of the world was
put to death. The government (shogunate) would go to great lengths to stay in power.
S
Japan wanted to keep all other ideas out of Japan. Everything must remain Japanese.
This shows how serious Japan was about being isolated. By closing their doors, Japan cut off
their access to new technology which kind of kept Japan in the dark ages in terms of technology.
